Premium requests vs AI credits
On June 1, 2026 GitHub Copilot replaced premium request units (PRUs) with usage-based AI credits. One credit is $0.01, spent on the tokens of each request at per-model rates. This is what changed and what it means for your bill.
Before: premium requests
Each plan included a number of premium requests per month. One interaction cost one request times the model's multiplier, so high-end models drained the allowance several times faster. Overage was billed per request.
After: AI credits
Each plan includes a monthly credit allowance. A request spends credits equal to its token cost at $0.01 per credit, so a small chat and a long agent run on the same model now cost very different amounts. Overage is $0.01 per credit under a budget you set.
No fixed conversion
GitHub publishes no premium-request-to-credit formula. The units measure different things (interactions with a multiplier versus tokens), so there is no single exchange rate. To estimate your new bill from an old one, price your actual model and session size in credits.
Grandfathering
Users on annual Pro or Pro+ plans stay on premium-request-based pricing until their plan expires, then downgrade to Copilot Free unless they renew onto usage-based billing. Monthly Pro and Pro+ plans moved to AI credits on 2026-06-01.
