GitHub Copilot plans and AI credit allowances
Every GitHub Copilot plan publishes a monthly AI credit allowance billed at $0.01 per credit. On every plan, the non-flex base allowance turns out to be worth exactly the plan's sticker price, to the cent: the subscription is effectively a credit prepayment. Individual plans then add flex credits on top, which is the volatile part of the allowance and is reported separately below.
| Plan | Price | Base credits | Base value | Flex credits | Total credits | Total value |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Copilot Pro | $10.00/mo | 1,000 | $10.00 | 500 | 1,500 / mo | $15.00 |
| Copilot Pro+ | $39.00/mo | 3,900 | $39.00 | 3,100 | 7,000 / mo | $70.00 |
| Copilot Max | $100.00/mo | 10,000 | $100.00 | 10,000 | 20,000 / mo | $200.00 |
| Copilot Business | $19.00/seat/mo | - | - | - | 1,900 / user | $19.00 / user |
| Copilot Enterprise | $39.00/seat/mo | - | - | - | 3,900 / user | $39.00 / user |
Business and Enterprise publish only a single pooled credit total, not a base/flex split, so those cells show a dash rather than zero.
The subscription is a credit prepayment
On 3 of 5 plans GitHub publishes a base/flex split, and on every one of them the base allowance is worth exactly the plan's price at $0.01 per credit, to the cent: Copilot Pro at $10.00/mo includes 1,000 base credits worth $10.00; Copilot Pro+ at $39.00/mo includes 3,900 base credits worth $39.00; Copilot Max at $100.00/mo includes 10,000 base credits worth $100.00; Copilot Business at $19.00/seat/mo includes 1,900 base credits worth $19.00; Copilot Enterprise at $39.00/seat/mo includes 3,900 base credits worth $39.00. The remaining plans publish only a pooled total, and that total is also exactly the seat price.
Copilot Pro adds 500 flex credits on top, for a total value of 1.50x the price; Copilot Pro+ adds 3,100 flex credits on top, for a total value of 1.79x the price; Copilot Max adds 10,000 flex credits on top, for a total value of 2.00x the price. That flex bonus is the part GitHub documents as variable ("designed to adapt as the economics of AI evolve"), which is why it is reported here as a separate bonus rather than folded into a single "you get more than you pay for" number. Business and Enterprise seats receive no flex credits at all, so their allowance never exceeds face value.

FAQ
- What AI credits does each GitHub Copilot plan include?
- Copilot Pro ($10.00/mo): 1,500 AI credits per month; Copilot Pro+ ($39.00/mo): 7,000 AI credits per month; Copilot Max ($100.00/mo): 20,000 AI credits per month; Copilot Business ($19.00/seat/mo): 1,900 AI credits per user, pooled at the billing entity; Copilot Enterprise ($39.00/seat/mo): 3,900 AI credits per user, pooled at the billing entity
- Are the AI credits worth what I pay for the plan?
- Yes, for the base allowance. On every plan the non-flex credits are worth exactly the price paid, to the cent: Copilot Pro at $10.00/mo includes 1,000 base credits worth $10.00; Copilot Pro+ at $39.00/mo includes 3,900 base credits worth $39.00; Copilot Max at $100.00/mo includes 10,000 base credits worth $100.00; Copilot Business at $19.00/seat/mo includes 1,900 base credits worth $19.00; Copilot Enterprise at $39.00/seat/mo includes 3,900 base credits worth $39.00. Flex credits, where a plan has them, are additional on top of that and are the part GitHub documents as variable, so they are not part of that guarantee.
- Do unused GitHub Copilot AI credits carry over?
- No. Unused AI credits do not carry over. The allowance resets to the full monthly amount on day 1 of each month, UTC, and whatever was unused is forfeited.
- What happens when I run out of AI credits?
- Once the included allowance is used up, extra usage bills at $0.01 per credit under a monthly budget you set, or usage pauses until the allowance resets on day 1 of each month, UTC.
